Describing Purple
03:18
|
|||
Music is an odd thing isn’t it? Equal parts art, performance, and language. Of course, the art form is the most commonly praised, but seldom to people talk about music being a language. The truth is that music is the language of emotion. Now that might look good on a poster, but what does it really mean?
Well friends, I have a theory. And that is that our definition of what a language is, is far too narrow to account for the truth of what we see in front of us.
Now, to demonstrate this, I’d like to try an experiment. I want all of you to imagine the color purple. See it in your mind’s eye, you can picture it clearly, right? Well then, if you can see it so clearly, why don’t you try to describe it in words to someone who is blind.
As I’m sure you just discovered, you have no clue how to do this. It’s impossible to do adequately in language. So, how do we do it? How do we describe purple?
I believe that this is the kind of language music is. Not a language of description, but wanna feeling, of emotion. Oh way to communicate emotions and abstract ideas in a way that people can understand, and empathize with.
So let’s try it, shall we? Let’s try to describe purple. Are you ready?
You see, purple is…

Tightrope

Tightrope a thousand feet up
Why do I have to change
The way you see me so you’ll leave me alone?
Walking high above the chasm
Have to be so careful so you
Don’t ask me for the answers
You’re not ready to know
No faith I’m flying blind here
Desperate to escape what I fear
Acceptance, rejection? Who knows.
Just shut up and hold on tight for now
We’re gonna make it through somehow
Whatever you do don’t look down.
~
Tightrope way up high in the air
So suddenly a gust of air
Could send me precariously
On a hairs bredth
Beasts of burden eat me up inside
Why should I run why should I hide
Why fight this feeling writhing inside
Shattered glass my skin my past
My hope for better futures dashed
On slashing spears from bigots past
The ashes of our peace now past
My broken dreams from sleep now past
My dreams of comfort surely slashed
Thoughts of security what’s that
My tightropes turned to ash

Up All Night
02:50
|
|||
Staying up all night is a funny thing, isn’t it? The morning sun, bright and inspiring after a good nights rest, feels somewhat out of place. It feels as if we’re stuck, caught in the revels of the previous evening which for far more civilized folk have long since faded into sleep. Yet here we stand, the only outward sign of our absolute discombobulation being the slightly heavier than usual bags under our eyes. And yet, there are still responsibilities laid out for us, regardless of how well rested we are on any particular day.
Sometimes, after crises, we are tempted to cling to the past. All traditions, habits, and schedules. Sometimes, this is good. But more often than not, it’s best to move on, and embrace new traditions. Things change, and that’s often scary. But the good thing is, is that usually that change is for the better.
